Can Stress Cause Hormone Imbalance?

If you have too much or too little of a hormone, you may have a hormone imbalance which can have serious health repercussions throughout your life.

These imbalances are becoming more prevalent in the modern age, and can start as early as the teenage years or as late as someone in their seventh decade of life.

Whenever they start, a common trigger or contributor to hormone imbalance is stress.

That’s right—stress can cause hormone imbalance.

As you become more stressed, your body increases cortisol production. This can override the normal production of your body’s hormones, which can result in a wide range of health issues.

There are many kinds of stress however, each incited by different catalysts such as:

  • Biological factors (exposure to bacteria, viruses, moulds, parasites, and microorganisms)
  • Chemical factors (exposure to toxins, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, household and industrial cleaners, dust, smoke, alcohol, pollution, and drugs)
  • Environmental factors (exposure to extreme heat or cold, noise, sun, altitude, allergens, xenoestrogens, and electromagnetic fields)
  • Nutritional factors (refined and highly-processed food, poorly-balanced diets, and other nutritional deficiencies)
  • Physical factors (strenuous physical exercise, surgery, trauma, starvation, intoxication, drug abuse, sleep deprivation, severe illness, infection, and lack of oxygen)
  • Psychological factors (anger, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, mental illness, negative thinking, and being overwhelmed by a change of circumstances).
